Etymology

OE  Bealding -ōra , 'Beald's bank,' v. ora .-ing is here used as in the ingtun- names. B (e )ald is found as a pers. name in OE (v. Cockayne, Leechdoms , ii. 298) and is a normal shortened form of such names as Bealdhūn , Bealdrēd . For the [indʒ] pronunciation cf. Fingest supra .
