Etymology

'Tubba's island', v. īeg , ēg . DEPN suggests that the pers.n. is a short form of Tūnbeorht . The same landowner is referred to in the 10th-cent. name tubban ford , v. Tubworth infra .

The 250′ contour delimits a peninsula of raised ground in the central part of the parish, and the parish-boundaries follow the streams which surround this except on the N., where Tubney Wood runs up to the higher ground occupied by Bessels Leigh.
