Etymology

Eastmanton Down, Estmanton 1292 Ch, 1298 Ipm, 1299 Cl, 1353, 1361 Ipm, Estmantone 1428 FA, Hestmunton 1542 ArchJ 5, Eastmanton , Eastmonton 1664PubLib (Clayton ). Probably 'farm of the eastern men', i.e. the people on the E. boundary of the area called Sparsholt, which included Kingston Lisle and Fawler to the W. Cf. Westmancote Wo 103 and Eastmanstreet W 260, which may be similar formations. Eastmanton Down is on the E. boundary of Sparsholt parish, immediately E. of Sparsholt Down. Eastmanton Fm, N.E. of Sparsholt Church, is not on O.S. maps but is mentioned in VCH iv, 312.
