Etymology

Carswell, Carswell Marsh, Chersvelle 1086 DB, Karswelle 1233–4 Os, Carswell '1275–6 RH, 1284Ass , Karswell 1316 FA, Carssewelle 1327SR , Carswell 1338 Pat, Carswelle 1428 FA, Carsewell Merssh 1467 Cl, Coswell 1535 VE, Carswell Marsh 1632Bodl , Corswell .Corswell Marsh 1761 Rocque, 'spring or stream where water-cress grows', v. cærse , w(i)ella. A fairly common name, usually surviving in the form Cresswell. It is difficult to be certain about the identification of early forms for this name in Berks. Besides Carswell in Buckland, there are Cresswell's Fm in Bray, and a lost name of the same origin in Burghfield (Pt 1, 44, 205). The forms from 1086 DB and 1275–6 RH refer to a place in Sutton Hundred, a description which does not suit any of the three examples. The DB form is tentatively identified with the Buckland place in VCH i, 368. DEPN gives the DB form, and also a form from 1191 P, which latter relates to Caswell O 315.
